Non-Invasive Prenatal DNA Testing is a safe way to obtain genetic information about a pregnancy using a simple blood sample from the mother. The test analyzes fetal DNA that naturally circulates in the mother’s bloodstream — meaning no risk to the baby and no invasive medical procedures.

Depending on the type of test ordered, it can be used for:

Prenatal paternity testing
Early gender testing

Certain prenatal genetic screenings
Relationship confirmation before birth

How the test works:

  • A blood sample is collected from the pregnant mother

  • A DNA sample is collected from the alleged father (usually cheek swab)

  • The lab isolates fetal DNA from the mother’s blood

  • DNA markers are compared to determine relationship or gender

No needles are used on the baby, and no procedures are done inside the womb.

Most non-invasive prenatal DNA tests can be done starting around:

7–9 weeks of pregnancy
